To me one of the greatest gifts you can give your Mother is to share past memories of joy and love. Let me share a very loving moment with you. Just so you get the picture of the event, I was the youngest child and it was the first day of kindergarten. With me heading off to school would mean for the first time in 25 years my Mother would be left alone at home with no children to watch. Here we go…
My Mother yelled time to get ready for school. I jumped out of bed all excited about starting something new and wonderful. My Mother already laid out my clothes, so I just rushed and put them on. I came running down the stairs all excited, Mom today is the day. She said, yes son today you get to start school. Go in the dining room and enjoy your breakfast. She prepaid a wonderful meal for me, there were eggs and bacon and toast. I quickly ate all the food and ran back to the living room. I am ready, should I leave now. No, you have another hour before you leave.
She got up and I followed her to the kitchen, Mom what are you doing now? I am preparing you lunch for school. I got you that special lunch pail you wanted and I have all your favorites for lunch for you. I said, wow this school stuff is exciting. I get new clothes, a great breakfast and lunch. We talked about a number of things we did over the summer and a little about what to expect for school.
Then the moment was here, Mom yell coming it’s time for you to go to school. I said my good byes and started down the front steps, I turned and waved good bye Mom, I will be back soon. As she was waving good bye, I noticed a tear. I dropped my lunch box and ran back up the steps, Mom it will be ok. Don’t you cry. I will be back very soon. She hugged me and said how much she loved me and wished I have a wonderful day at school. I told her not to worry when I come back we can talk and play until dinner. I turned and started leaving again. She waved good bye and said with a choke in her voice Love you and have a great day.
That was my earliest memory of my Mother in detail. I tell my Mother this story a few times and she always loved how I remember it all so well. I know as a parent I too remember so many special moments. Take some time today to remember one of your special moments with Mom and share it with her. She will enjoy it and it will mean so much more than any gift you could give her.
Much Joy and Love to you and yours.
